As one of Germany’s largest municipal companies, SWM provides electricity, natural gas, district heating, district cooling, drinking water, mobility services and telecommunications infrastructure for Munich and the surrounding region. Through these services, SWM is part of Munich’s public utility infrastructure and supports the city’s economic development and quality of life.

SWM keeps Munich running around the clock, 24/7: We supply the city of Munich with electricity, natural gas, district heating, district cooling and spring fresh drinking water from the Bavarian Alpine foothills. Our services also include the network management for the energy and water networks, distribution and sales. What’s more, we also operate 18 indoor and summer swimming pools.
Our MVG mobility subsidiary is responsible for the municipal subway, bus and tram networks, as well as our MVG bike offerings. By expanding fiber optics and other communication networks, we are laying the foundations for the networked and liveable city of the future.
The City of Munich is the 100% owner of SWM. In other words, SWM belongs to the citizens of Munich and is therefore an essential part of municipal public services. We are committed to education and social issues and rank as one of Munich's largest employers. Our employees act in a cooperative manner and in a spirit of partnership, both internally and externally.

Energy Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Projects
Renewable Energy Expansion Programme
In 2009, SWM launched its Renewable Energy Expansion Programme and has since invested in facilities that generate electricity from renewable energy sources.
Electricity and Heat Generation
SWM develops and operates generation facilities in the electricity and heating sectors. These include projects based on renewable energy sources and geothermal energy.
SWM’s activities
- From 2025 on, SWM can produce sufficient green electricity in its own plants to cover all of Munich’s requirements. And the expansion continues: To keep up with Munich's growing electricity demand, further renewable energy projects are in planning or under construction.
- SWM has been expanding the use of geothermal energy for district heating for many years. Geothermal installations are already in operation in the Munich region, and further projects are being developed. The long-term objective is to increase the share of geothermal energy in Munich’s district heating system.
- SWM operates district cooling systems that use naturally cold groundwater and water from Munich’s urban streams. Depending on the application and comparison scenario, district cooling can require significantly less electricity than conventional cooling systems.
SWM’s Renewable Energy Facilities
Whenever possible, SWM gives preference to projects in Munich and the surrounding region. However, due to geographical and spatial constraints, the available wind and solar potential in the region alone is not sufficient to cover the required generation volume.
For this reason, SWM also participates in renewable energy projects at other locations in Germany and Europe together with experienced project partners.
