Washing and drying

You can also save energy when doing your washing. We show you which pointers to follow when washing and drying clothes:

Doing the washing

Full loads: The washing machine is most efficient when it has a full load. Use the full capacity of the washing machine’s drum without overloading it.

Take account of water hardness: Measure your washing powder based on the hardness grade of water.

No pre-wash: Do not use the pre-wash program unless the washing is extremely dirty. Stubborn stains can be pretreated before washing with environmentally friendly solutions, such as bile soap.

Not too hot: A 40-degree cycle is often sufficient for a normal wash. A 60-degree cycle is usually enough for a hot wash and uses up to 40% less electricity than 95-degree cycles.

Hot water supply: You can also save electricity by connecting the washing machine directly to the hot water supply. The use of a heat pump, solar system or district heating is also extremely efficient.

Drying clothes

Drying naturally: The best way to dry clothes is naturally in the air. This saves the electricity that a tumble dryer would use. Take the wash out of the washing machine as soon as the cycle finishes and straighten clothes before hanging. This saves time and electricity when ironing.

Spin well: If using a tumble dryer, use the washing machine’s highest possible spin speed at around 1200 revolutions. This leaves the wash with less residual moisture and means the dryer does not have to run for so long.

Full load: The dryer should also be fully loaded. Dry the full washing machine load in one go. Drying two half loads consumes around a third more power.
Not too dry: Overdrying costs energy and damages fabrics. All clothes which are to be ironed should be slightly damp. Dryers with humidity sensors can be set to “dry for ironing” mode.

Regular cleaning: The filter and, with condensation systems, the condensation container should be cleaned after each drying cycle. The build-up of fluff has an adverse effect on the dryer’s performance.
