Refrigerators and freezers

SWM Energiespartipps Küchengeräte

Refrigerators and freezers consume lots of energy and are in operation around the clock. Therefore, an energy-saving approach is extremely important here.

Select the right size: Your refrigerator’s capacity should be approximately in line with your household’s requirements. The following rule of thumb should help: a single household requires capacity of 100 to 140 liters, whereas a family of four should be based on 50 liters per person.

Chest freezers instead of upright ones: Chest freezers are usually more economical than upright freezers. If you have a separate appliance of this kind, you can do without the freezer compartment in the refrigerator.

The right location: Position the appliance in a cool, dry and well ventilated spot. Sources of heat, such as the oven, washing machine, heating system or window (sunlight), should be as far away as possible or separated by an insulation panel. Ensure there is sufficient air supply behind the appliance, keep the ventilation grille clear and clean this regularly to ensure that waste heat can escape unobstructed.

The right temperature: Choose a temperature of + 5 to + 7° C for refrigerators and - 18° C for freezers. Power consumption increases if the temperature is too low.

Do not leave the door open: Only keep the door open for short periods of time. If the refrigerator is well organized, you will be able to find things quickly. Label frozen food to keep things tidy.

Cool and cover food: Only put food that is cooled to room temperature and covered in the refrigerator or freezer. This will save electricity and prevent frost from forming.

Defrost in the fridge: Defrost frozen food in the refrigerator. This allows the food to transfer cold to the appliance.

Defrost regularly: Defrost appliances without automatic defrosting systems periodically to prevent the build-up of ice from increasing electricity consumption. A long trip is a good opportunity to defrost the refrigerator and to switch it off for a while, allowing you to save additional energy. Leave the door open to prevent mold from forming.

Replace seals: Regularly check the door’s rubber seals. These should be changed if they are brittle or broken.
