M-WLAN: free, unlimited and secure surfing

M-WLAN

On behalf of the Munich municipality, Stadtwerke München (SWM), together with its partners M-net und muenchen.de, has launched the M-WLAN (WiFi) project. On behalf of the Munich municipality, Stadtwerke München (SWM), together with its partners M-net und muenchen.de, has launched the M-WLAN (WiFi) project. Residents and visitors alike will benefit from unlimited access to free WiFi. The eduroam initiative provides researchers and students with access to knowledge-based networks.

By 2013 it was already possible to use the free M-WLAN system at four public places in the Munich city center (Marienplatz, Odeonsplatz, Sendlinger Tor, Stachus). By early 2015, ten more public hotspots in the city were added: Orleansplatz, Lehel, Harras, Münchner Freiheit, Marienhof, Wettersteinplatz, Giesinger Bahnhofplatz, Rotkreuzplatz, Neuperlach Zentrum (PEP) and Deutsches Museum.

Other inner-city sites, such as Gärtnerplatz and Viktualienmarkt, are planned.

SWM provides this service with support from its subsidiary M-net and the city portal muenchen.de. In the future, it will also be possible to supply municipal administrative areas and waiting zones with mobile Internet. In the mid-term, companies and non-municipal institutions will be able to be connected.

M-WLAN has proved a huge success for both residents and visitors: Rising access numbers and very positive feedback are the proof. The initiative also underscores Munich’s claim as a high-tech location.

Uncomplicated access

Access to SWM’s free Internet is simplicity itself: On a WiFi-enabled device (laptop, smartphone, tablet, etc.), the user searches for the SWM network, which appears as “M-WLAN Free WiFi” on the relevant menu, e.g. under Settings/Wi-Fi. The user then calls up the web browser (on many devices this is done automatically once the network has been selected) and agrees to the terms and conditions of use. Once this is done, the user is taken to the starting page with the Internet content of the Munich municipality, SWM and M-net. From there, free Internet access is available. In the course of the year, automatic selection via an encrypted link will be possible after one-time registration.

After 60 minutes, the link is disconnected for security reasons. However, users can then reconnect and are permitted to do so as often as they please.

Eduroam: M-WLAN expands the university campus

The European knowledge initiative eduroam has provided encrypted links to the Internet and national knowledge-based networks via M-WLAN hotspots since April 2014. It is the result of collaboration between SWM, the Leibniz Computer Center and the German Research Network. Eduroam guarantees users of all participating organizations secure Internet access anywhere in the world and extends the university campus to other localities in Munich. Over 130,000 students, researchers and university staff in Munich alone have access the eduroam network.
