Development of fibre-optic network

Glasfaserkabel M-net

We are installing a fiber-optic network in Munich to enable high-speed Internet and the use of many new telecommunications and entertainment services.

The fiber-optic network is a milestone in the development of Munich’s infrastructure: after all, in today’s world, a powerful data highway is as much a part of the infrastructure as public transportation and a reliable energy supply.

SWM’s fiber-optic network

SWM and its subsidiary M-net have jointly supplied fiber-optic cable links to around 32,000 buildings, most of them inside the Mittlerer Ring – amounting to half of all the housing in Munich. The fiber-optic network is being expanded gradually and steadily – mainly in city areas with a relatively dense population density near the existing fiber-optic network, as well as in new housing areas. This will ensure that the network is economically-viable to install and operate.

Your connection to the fiber-optic network

SWM has made its fiber-optic network available to its subsidiary M-net.

Advantages thanks to new technology

The fiber-optic expansion project plays a key role in the quality of life of Munich’s citizens. Fiber-optic lines make it possible to use high-speed Internet with a capacity several times greater than today’s standard DSL connection, providing transmission speeds of up to 300 Mbit/s. A whole range of new services can be used: telephone, Internet and television through one line (triple play), high-resolution television (HDTV) and video on demand. Existing home equipment can continue to be used.

Convenient home workplaces and online-based educational content are possible without restrictions.

Self-employed individuals and small businesses can now also obtain a powerful Internet connection and enjoy a decisive competitive edge.

Moreover, in the future, fiber-optic lines will also serve as a transmission link for remotely monitored energy meters. The next few years will see the introduction of intelligent measurement systems that meet stringent data-protection laws. These will provide precise information on energy consumption in real-time and help users save energy.
