SWM - enhancing Munich’s quality of life

Munich is one of the world's leading cities in terms of quality of life, and excels in the fields of culture, leisure facilities, sport and education. The city on the Isar ranks highly across the board - and SWM is also making major contributions here.

Beyond our utilities mandate, we are committed to ensuring high quality of life and the city’s sustainability, while assuming responsibilities that few private enterprises would. SWM’s strategy focuses on delivering long-term benefits for the people of Munich rather than short-term profit gains.

As a municipal company providing services for all of Munich’s citizens, SWM is committed to sustainability. Protection of the climate and environment are key elements of SWM’s corporate policy.

One of SWM’s stated corporate objectives is to adhere to national climate protection targets and the city of Munich’s climate protection program. SWM’s environmental commitment, however, extends far beyond these goals. Our intelligent energy mix is extremely effective and focuses on the systematic expansion of regenerative energy production and combined heat and power generation.

Besides it is SWM's vision for Munich to be the first large German city with district heating solely originating from regenerative energy sources.

Energy efficiency is another key element of SWM’s energy strategy. This involves the economical use of primary energy. Our strategy is also sound in terms of supply security and ensures that we are largely self-sufficient from fossil fuels that are finite resources. It also makes us more independent of oil and gas importers and the price fluctuations on the global markets.

We promote both high-level and popular sport in Munich. We assist the Leichtathletikgemeinschaft Stadtwerke München athletics club and the Stadtwerke München swimming club.

SWM also supports the TSV 1860 München sports club, which looks back on a long tradition.

As a partner of the Munich marathon, one of Munich’s major sporting events, we provide participants with around 45,000 litres of Munich drinking water.

We also back the B2RUN company run and the Munich amateur sports association.

Moreover, SWM operates sporting facilities itself. With our 18 M-Bäder public swimming pools, we run most of the city’s water sports facilities. Almost four million visitors a year enjoy a wide range of services catering to all needs and tastes.

Munich’s cultural venues can rely on a dependable supply of electricity, natural gas, district heating and water. SWM also makes a major contribution to Munich’s diverse cultural scene.

The Olympic Park  is also famous for its cultural events. SWM is a long-term partner and responsible for building and site management.

Tollwood-Festival: SWM is one of the main sponsors of Tollwood and provides both festival sites with SWM green electricity and water (M-Wasser) during the summer and winter events.

Hellabrunn Zoo: SWM promotes the world’s first geo-zoo at Hellabrunn.

As a municipal company SWM assumes social responsibility. We attach great importance to promoting education as one of Munich’s largest vocational training providers.

SWM projects:

  • We offer energy advice for low-income households.
  • The SWM Educational Foundation provides support for young people who are disadvantaged in the modern education system owing to their social background.
  • The Stadtwerkeprojekt initiative provides socially disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to receive training and get their careers off to a good start.
  • We give school pupils the opportunity to visit our power stations, regenerative energy production plants and drinking water supply installations.
