Page Background

From transport company to mobility

service provider

Against this background, intermodal mobility will also play

a role for the future development of our Münchner Ver-

kehrsgesellschaft (MVG) subsidiary. In addition to its tradi-

tional core business of public-transport services, MVG has

already expanded its range of offerings over the last few

years through additional mobility services for individual

requirements, e.g. cooperations with car-sharing providers

or the “MVG Rad” public bike-rental system. The path is

clear: MVG is evolving from bus, underground and tram

operator into a comprehensive mobility service provider

with a focus on extended mobility solutions from the start-

ing point to the destination of a trip, going far beyond

classic public transport with bus, underground and tram

lines. All these offerings are interlinked via our digital

mobility platform, which will be expanded continuously

in the future, too.

Valid quantification of the economic potential that autono-

mous driving or driverless rail systems may have in real-life

application are not yet possible at the current juncture. We

are nevertheless keeping a close eye on these develop-

ments in order to be able to offer marketable solutions in

good time. The existing technological potential will set the

stage for new mobility concepts that will make transport

and traffic in Munich even more city-friendly and environ-

mentally benign and are useful complements to existing

mobility offerings.

Munich’s continued growth creates particular pressure to

act. The persistent stream of people moving to the city

causes the existing transport networks to reach the limit of

their capacities. The substantial reinvestment and new-construction requirements in infrastructure and vehicles

will only be feasible if adequate user financing is ensured

and sufficient public funds are made available. In addition,

suitable funding is a prerequisite for MVG’s continued

ability to provide its transport services from its own

resources. Apart from an ongoing focus on efficient cost

structures and income from new business areas, MVG

relies on policy-makers’ support in the creation of suitable

framework conditions.
