Read energy labels when purchasing goods

Saving energy starts with purchasing goods. Take account of the energy efficiency rating when buying electrical items.

EU energy label  Efficiency is particularly important with large items such as freezers, refrigerators, tumble dryers, dish washers, washing machines and TVs because they consume the most power in the home. Also check whether the appliance can be completely disconnected from the mains and how much energy it uses in stand-by mode.

Even if appliances with the best efficiency ratings are more expensive than others, the higher purchase price quickly pays off thanks to much lower electricity bills. For example, a 10-year-old refrigerator uses twice as much electricity as a new one. Buying a modern, economical appliance therefore often pays off after just a few years.

Labels like the EU energy label, the “Blaue Engel”, EnergyStar, the EU Flower and the TCO mark help you to make your decision.
